Algeria - Case Study

Sétif is located in the north-east of Algeria, and is characterised by diversified agro-systems, with cereal crops and livestock.

The province of Sétif is considered a prime region for cereal cultivation. It ranks first in terms of area, covering 1.8 million hectares. This sector occupies over 40% of the total arable land. Significant cereal cultivation areas are located in the Central region (300 to 450 mm of rainfall). Each municipality has an area of more than 4,000 hectares dedicated to cereal.

Area of Sétif: 6,549 km² (0.27% of the national territory), located in the eastern part Population: 1.6 million inhabitants, 20% in rural areas

The total cultivated area in the province of Sétif is 357,646 hectares (4% of the national cultivated area). Most farms are family-run, with 12,000 farms between 2-5 hectares and 3,472 farms between 20-50 hectares.

The region has a semi-arid continental climate with cold, wet winters and dry, hot summers. The province is subdivided into three agro-ecological zones: North: Black vertisol soils, deep, with an annual rainfall of 600 mm. Center (Plains): Suitable for agro-pastoral activities. South: Boutaleb mountain range with an annual rainfall of 300 mm.

Socio-economic issues

The importance of this region lies in its specialization in cereal crop production systems. Cereal production in Sétif contributes significantly to Algeria's overall agricultural output and plays a crucial role in ensuring food security for the country. However, this region relies on a fossil aquifer with very limited renewable capacity for irrigation and potable water for the large city of Sétif. Consequently, the expansion of intensive agriculture leads to the overexploitation of the aquifer, which threatens both wheat cultivation and the well-being of the local population. This overexploitation results in low agricultural income and contributes to the phenomenon of desertification due to the intensification of agriculture.
